Yes, I've have that birdie in my ear for a while now. Probably came from my habit of playing guitar 3 feet away from a 50 watt Sunn amp set to "10". Fun at the time, but I'm paying the price now. In addition to the ringing, they're sensitive to loud noises.
Not much you can do about it, maybe cut down on caffeine, booze and stress all of which seems to make it worse. I've heard about pink noise therapy and 'ear retraining' but don't know much about it.
Maybe this should moved to the health forum?

I have it. I think it's mild. I only notice when I sleep and it's quite - if - I think about it.

I've had since Vietnam - it is terrible and there is no cure.

I have it. Nice little keepsake from the Gulf War. I've gotten used to it but sometimes, like right now, it's annoying as hell.

Only a wild assumption - but would I be correct in saying that most of the sufferers are ex military? I do have a small pension from the Australian government, but as Cluezo points out 'there is no cure', lucky us for playing with bang bangs. I've had it a few years. It emerged a day after a severe headache, which I believe was caused by a virus or other infection. It wasn't caused by loud noises over a proplonged period, which is the most common cause. Mine is a low level hiss at about 5000 hz or so (tested by comparing my tinnitus with sound files). I mostly notice it at night time and when I wake up (quiet environments).
I found a few sould files on btjunkie - thunderstors/rainfall, which can mask the sound, when I want to listen and relax. These are only maskers and don't subdue the tinnitus. However I found some of the test pattern "music" by Ryoji Ikeda can actually diminish the tinnitus for a brief period. But others have said there isn't any long term cure!

For those with it, living & teaching in bkk, how's is your tinnitus affected?
Does living in a big, loud, crazy city mask the tinnitus? Or does that make it worse?
Do you wear any ear plugs when out? Can you still enjoy a gentleman like visit to a loud beating pole club or anyother club?

I think there are a few different kinds of tinnitus so they don't all respond to noise in exactly the same way. But, generally speaking loud noises will make it worse, so Bangers is a problem for me. Even with earplugs, loud clubs are a no go. Go-Go is a no-go. Even walking down a busy street is pretty loud, so when I was there, I would wear earplugs then. And don't even mention longtail boats.
On the plus side, the heat means there are usually fans running all the time at home, which produces a good white noise sort of background. This is good for night time and sleeping when the ringing is more of a distraction. But it also means you may not be aware if your tinnitus is getting worse because there are fewer places where it is completely quiet.

It seems pretty common amongst musicians and the military because of the exposure to loud noise. Any idea what percentage of the people in your unit have it? Guns are really loud and firing them with any kind of regularity has got to be bad news for your ears. What's amazing to me is that not everyone gets it. There are some lucky souls out there who are blessed with very resilient ears. On the other hand, I think there are people who have suffered hearing loss but may not have tinnitus. The reverse is also true. Some people have noticeable tinnitus but may not have bad hearing.
