New iMac -- it just gets better, don't it?

First off -- the highest spec one is 200USD CHEAPER than the previous highest spec iMac! Damn good I didn't get an iMac then *_* !! Now here are the latest screamers. Who was that guy who said that Apple's stuff look like kid's toys coz of the white colour? Well now you can rest easily knowing these are no white tinker-toys. Apple's taken the aluminium frame of their LCD display line and put it into the iMac line. Macs are never perfect -- but they're next to perfection anyways. Take for example the glossy screen. Why the hell did they go with glossy? Yeah, sure the colours look deeper and richer on a glossy screen ... but what if... just WHAT IF you have a light glaring on your screen at an irritating angle? Dunno if it's affected anyone in the past, but I'm so used to matte screens I'm a bit paranoid of this -- even though I've never seen or experienced the glossy screen for myself. I could be wrong, in other words. Next -- the keyboard. Oh sure, it's thinner than the bloody iMac stand! BUT -- there aren't any keys anymore! They've put BUTTONS! Now I probably don't need to experience this in person to know that li'l poke-buttons aren't a good thing for serious typing. But then again, Apple usually researches this, and again, I may be wrong. Maybe it will take off. Afterall, I've had my own share of complaints about the dust-collecting design of Apple's former keyboard yet in the end I love it more than it's predecessor. Hmmm... we'll see. I won't be getting one of these though. Nope. My 2Ghz G5 iMac still serves my needs (PC gaming aside). Also, I'm really in need of a laptop err... notebook computer right now -- I hardly ever get to use my iMac at home these days (hint: wife and baby kid). But for those of you who are looking for a desktop. Why get anything else?

Have you guys had much trouble getting online with a Mac in Thailand. They need an adsl modem right? (harder and more expensive to come by than a USB one, or are you all on wi fi?)

USB modems work as well, provided the manufacturer's website has the right drivers for your mac. Billion (which is a commonly used modem brand in Thailand) sure does. Infact, using my mac with my USB modem is a lot easier than the PeeCee once you set everything up... I have a connection right away as soon as the machine boots, whereas on the PC I need to click the connect-button everytime to connect. Update on the new iMac. I got to fondle the one they have on display at Siam Discovery. Yes, I know you've heard the nightmares about that particular store, but at the moment they are the ONLY store around the Siam area that has the new iMac on display. So here are some of the things that I've confirmed from my affair: Glossy Screen -- is alright I guess -- IF your house isn't lit up like a Christmas tree or, a shopping mall. With over 24" of glass (because there is a black bezel around the screen area still), light has plenty to reflect on. Online reports say that it hasn't been a problem even to people who are used to matte displays though... because you get used to it eventually. But surely one doesn't really forget a better past experience do they? I still wish we had a matte option for this iMac. Keyboard -- I opened up a word processing app (Pages) and started pecking away at the keyboard. One thing I realised was that I didn't make many typos... at least far less than I did on a macbook. That's good. Then I tried being pessimistic and wondered who would really enjoy typing like this for long periods of time? Then I realised I do! Infact I do it everyday and I'm doing it now -- My powerbook uses "buttons" for keys... so yeah, why not? I also realised that with the new keyboard, a condom wasn't needed to protect the keys from dust. The condom I put on my old keyboard has made the keys stick and jam in the past... now people can do away completely with one because there's really nothing left to protect. The keys are easier to clean... and the aluminium... well... dust just don't stick on it much at all! So praise for the new keyboard right there! The black logo in front -- damn. I keep thinking it looks ugly in pictures, but I didn't really notice it in the store. I guess it ain't that bad afterall. Black back. Well... when you go black, there's no turning back is there :D ? iLife '08 -- This is just so cool that it made me so jealous I didn't want to play with it too much or risk feeling more depressed about it. I need to pick up a copy of this soon. Very soon. What really bites is that I had just finished downloading iLife '06 a few weeks ago and it took me literally WEEKS to download it coz of the shite bandwidth here. Dayyymmnnnnn. Weight -- I thought the aluminium iMac would be heavier... but it aint --- compared to my G5 iMac that is. I think this is mostly due to the fact that my G5 has an ultra-large heatsink compared to the Intel-based iMacs. Coolness -- omfg. It's just too cool. Like, actually using it is so good that you just want to buy one to use at home for yourself! Too bad my iMac is still very capable for me and still has a one year warranty left on it, else I would have bought this new iMac already. Hmmm.... anyone interested in taking my G5 2Ghz 2GB RAM 250GB HD 20" iMac off me for 50,000 baht? I'm serious. I'll even throw in a Logitech Quickcam 4000, a 160GB external harddisk and a 5-button+scroll wheel Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer wireless mouse.

I saw the 24" this weekend.. IT IS HUGE.. GINORMOUS!!! They have it at iStudio in Future Park if you are in Rangsit. I'm sure they have them in BKK too.

I think I got my mac sometime after or before the current new system came out. It doesn't matter really though, as unlike Vista or anything Micro$$$oft, you can use any Mac OS X system and it won't die on you. OS X is updated nicely via Software update, although some mac store folks will tell you it's better to download the stand-alone updates from the Apple site (im lazy, so I've never taken this advice... but so far so good... no problems w the Software Update updater). Also, I think it's BEST that you buy OS X as soon as it comes out because certain Software updates can be crappy with older machines. Example: OS 10.3.6 is better than 10.3.7-9 on a G4 mac. So if you have version .0 of the OS, you can choose which version to upgrade to easily... and it's also easy to downgrade if needed. New macs that come out after the latest version of OS X ships will ONLY run on the latest version of OS X... so you can't go back to the older versions... not that many would want to.

The worst scenario I had was buying Tiger, pretty much the day it came out. My (then) USB modem died on me because my ISP had not developed the drivers for Tiger, my printer stopped communicating for the same reason. Bit by bit, the updates were developed and I pieced everything back together. The 3 - 6 month transition period was discouraging, but I must add, it has been incredibly robust since [image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/smile.gif] I too like the downloaded updates, however I'm cautious with the filesizes, which are often >30MB so I only download updates to what I use a lot plus the security related ones. I think it will buy me a few months more disk space in the end game.
