not so much parenting in thailand, more parenting in general. my daughter turns 1 year next week and in a rational sense i know that andrew wakefield's research has been discredited but it still doesnt stop me from worrying. any parents here got any experience of this difficult decision?
mmr vaccine
RespondGET. THE. KID. VACCINATED!
Vaccines, particularly against common childhood diseases, work.
The majority of "concerns" that used to be in play had all been invalidated by now - of all the various 'dangerous substances' claimed to be in vaccines composition, you will find higher concentrations in your toilet paper (seriously!), which you are exposed to continuously (well, less so in Thailand).
^ Right, Doctor.
He was a normal 18 month old with a 10 word vocabulary. Then two days after Jeremy received a shot for diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus, he was in the hospital.
Click play to watch CBN coverage of the pros and cons of vaccinations. Does evidence suggest they cause diseases in children? Gailon Totheroh explains.
"He was hospitalized two days after the shot and he was running a fever of 103. And he was so hot that the nurse that was standing there could feel the heat radiating off his body." Jeremy's mother Lynn said.
For the last 29 years, Jeremy has not spoken an intelligible word.
Cases like this are not uncommon -- 4,500 families are suing the government because they believe vaccines caused their child's autism.
Since the 1980s, critics have questioned the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. Government health officials and most doctors insist the benefits are large and the problems exaggerated.
"The risks are far greater to your child of not getting immunized than any kind of speculative potential relationship between the vaccine and the development of autism," said Irwin Redlener, MD, Columbia University.
Barbara Loe Fisher of the National Vaccine Information Center says there are real problems, but many doctors are in denial. She said, "It can't be true -- because how, how, could they possibly really live with the idea that something that they try to do that was good - has turned out to be bad for a lot of people."
I really am sorry for you that you feel the need to spread FUD to advance your trolling agenda, while giving parents cause for concern and worry. Seriously, do you have absolutely no shame -- and nothing better to do than scouring Google for even the remotest negative link to *everything* I say?
A concerned parent has posted here for advice - voicing valid concerns in the wake of disinformation advanced by, mostly idiots, quoting and using the Wakefield research as their battering ram. Subsequently, not only has the Wakefield research been discredited as containing deliberately falsified data, but the wave of parents that prevented their children from being vaccinated has resulted in a reduction of herd immunity, and an actual increase in cases of various diseases (in specific regions) that we considered to have been 'under control' or 'eradicated'.
Yet, despite the parents' concern for his child, you had no other agenda than to continue your trolling and stalking (just as you have done numerous times in the past) - without nary any consideration for this parent's genuine worries. You seriously disgust me.

your trolling agenda
Concerns for a member's infant child is trolling?
bulldog, there's been plenty written about this, but none more impassioned than Roald Dahl's plea for parents to have their children vaccinated :
Roald Dahl on vaccinating your kids – Boing Boing (http://boingboing.net/2009/06/03/roald-dahl-on-vaccin.html)
Here in Britain, because so many parents refuse, either out of obstinacy or ignorance or fear, to allow their children to be immunised, we still have a hundred thousand cases of measles every year.
Out of those, more than 10,000 will suffer side effects of one kind or another. At least 10,000 will develop ear or chest infections. About 20 will die.
LET THAT SINK IN.
Every year around 20 children will die in Britain from measles.
So what about the risks that your children will run from being immunised?
They are almost non-existent.
Listen to this.
In a district of around 300,000 people, there will be only one child every 250 years who will develop serious side effects from measles immunisation!
That is about a million to one chance. I should think there would be more chance of your child choking to death on a chocolate bar than of becoming seriously ill from a measles immunisation.
So what on earth are you worrying about?
It really is almost a crime to allow your child to go unimmunised. The ideal time to have it done is at 13 months, but it is never too late. All school-children who have not yet had a measles immunisation should beg their parents to arrange for them to have one as soon as possible. Incidentally, I dedicated two of my books to Olivia, the first was James and the Giant Peach'. That was when she was still alive. The second was 'The BFG', dedicated to her memory after she had died from measles. You will see her name at the beginning of each of these books. And I know how happy she would be if only she could know that her death had helped to save a good deal of illness and death among other children.

I'm a parent. Hopefully more will click on. I'm waiting for the guy who posts: Yes, my child got the vaccine and nothing bad happened. Pity there are no two people on Earth with the exact same biology.
Remember they don't vaccinate puppies till they're 6 months old.
Another valid link, bulldog :
To vaccinate or not to vaccinate? (http://news.consumerreports.org/health/2008/09/to-vaccinate-or.html)
Sep 23, 2008 3:52 PM
For parents looking for information on vaccines, the Web can be a confusing place. Misinformation abounds about a purported link between childhood vaccines and autism (http://www.consumerreports.org/health/treatment-centers/childrens-health/autism/introduction.htm), and anti-vaccination Web sites have been on the rise in recent years. Naturally, that can cause parents anguish about when and whether to vaccinate their children. But the science is clear; there is no concrete evidence of a link between vaccinations and autism. Meanwhile, largely because of the movement by a determined minority against vaccination, long eradicated diseases are gaining a new foothold, making vaccination as important as ever.
Another in a long line of studies, this one by researchers from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, and released this month in the Public Library of Science (http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0003140), has also helped dispel the myth of a link between themeasles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine (http://www.consumerreports.org/health/drug-reports/measles-mumps-and-rubella-vaccines.htm), and the development of autism in children.
Another theory, that mercury in thimerosal—a preservative that was once used in many vaccines—causes autism has also been disproved by several reliable studies (http://www.iom.edu/CMS/3793/4705/20155.aspx). Nevertheless, thimerosal has been removed as an ingredient in most vaccines as a precautionary measure to lower children’s exposure to mercury (thimerosal is still used in most flu shots and is considered safe).
Yet the notion that such a link exists remains strong in our popular consciousness. For example, Jenny McCarthy, an actress who wrote a book about her son with autism, regularly appear on television shows and other outlets to bolster the vaccines-cause-autism myth. Unfortunately, this kind of anecdotal evidence (http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=how-anecdotal-evidence-can-undermine-scientific-results&sc=DD_20080725) may be more convincing to people than well-controlled clinical trials.
To understand the pervasive myth, consider its history. Autism is commonly diagnosed in early childhood (http://www.consumerreports.org/health/treatment-centers/childrens-health/autism/diagnosis.htm), around the same time that children get vaccinations, like MMR. Some parents of autistic children reported that after vaccination, their children had an illness, such as a high fever or intestinal inflammation, and then were diagnosed with autism. In 1998, The Lancet, a British medical journal, published a study that hypothesized, but didn't prove, a link between the MMR vaccine and autism (http://www.consumerreports.org/health/treatment-centers/childrens-health/autism/what-is-it/mmr-and-autism.htm). Upon its release, the lead researcher, Andrew Wakefield, held a press conference to promote the link and the debate has raged ever since. But even as the vaccine debate continued, that study was discredited.
A new book, "Autism's False Prophets," published this month by Columbia University Press retells the heated history of the debate. The author, Paul A. Offit M.D., is chief of infectious diseases and the director of the vaccine education center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and is also an inventor and patent-holder of the rotavirus vaccine RotaTeq. Offit reviews the story behind the 1998 Lancet study, which examined 12 children with autism and 14 controls. The findings, which hypothesized a link, were never confirmed by other studies and the autism link was retracted in 2004 in the Lancet by 10 of the study's 13 authors, after it was revealed that the lead researcher had hidden a conflict of interest. Wakefield had been partly funded by a legal aid society investigating a potential lawsuit on beh
He's asking for parents. Surely you're not one.
Why ask parents for their opinions? If you're doing research into the propagation of crazy beliefs, then that's who you want to talk to but otherwise look at the research.

For the record - after years of insisting vaccines gave her kid autism, Jenny's kid was diagnosed at not actually having autism, in the same time as the Wakefield study was debunked as a fraud.

No. I'd - as I say - look at research. But if - for reasons I can't begin to understand - you decide to take your lead from what other parents you happen to meet on the internet do, you will be betting your infant's well on something of vastly less value than even 'summarized sponsored articles from Google'. Who or what is going to be forming the opinions of these parents? Science? Research? Clinical trials? Or totally fucking crazy people blogging away in the dark and who have nothing to with science? Whether or not MMR causes autism is a scientific question which is not going to be settled - and in fact, wasn't settled - by the uniformed anecdotes of people with no expertise. It seems amazing that this is even a question.

it was a bloody firestorm of stupidity around vaccination season (I'm on the fence regarding flu vaccines - only because they aren't as effective, because you are dealing with last year's virus), but am 100% in support of MMR and other childhood vaccinations. The damage from the actual diseases, which is verifiable and real if your child contracts the disease, far outweighs the infinitessimal risk that *might* exist.
I find it fascinating that even with the Wakefield study being totally discredited, Jenny McCarthy having left the stage in shame, that there are still fringe groups deliberately willing to place large numbers of children and populations at risk in order to push their personal agendas...

Maybe whatever they hear from Glenn Beck. That is if they haven't a hotline to Jesus.
Think, is the AMA reliable? Have there ever been drugs AMA certified that turned out to be life-threatening? Do we know what a class action suit is? Have you ever seen emails asking you if you've even taken "such and such" a drug? Does the AMA have enough lobby and political clout to do whatever they please? Have any idea of the profit margin gained from drug sales? I can't decide who's the sleazier scam, the AMA or the military-industrial complex. Here's the answer, OP, flip a coin.
^ So the choice you're positing is between an occasionally - or even regularly - failing and corrupt organization and Glenn Beck/Jesus. Is that a choice you have to spend much time over? It's not the choice faced (there are, after all, organisations in the world of medicine other than the AMA and countries other than America where this has been researched) but the decision seems pretty bloody obvious to me.

nope. the american medical association (ama) is just an association of a small percentage of u.s. doctors which lobbies on their behalf and also publishes a weekly journal (jama).
The Medical-Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex - Corruption in Drug Research and in Medicine
Dr. Guylaine Lanctot, M.D.
"The medical establishment works closely with the drug multinationals whose main objective is profits, and whose worst nightmare would be an epidemic of good health. Lots of drugs MUST be sold. In order to achieve this, anything goes: lies, fraud, and kickbacks. Doctors are the principal salespeople of the drug companies. They are rewarded with research grants, gifts, and lavish perks. The principal buyers are the public - from infants to the elderly - who MUST be thoroughly medicated and vaccinated...at any cost! Why do the Medical Fascism - Pharmaceutical corporations accused of Genocide before ICC in The Hagueauthorities forbid alternative medicine? Because they are serving the industry, and the industry cannot make money with herbs, vitamins, and homeopathy. They cannot patent natural remedies. That is why they push synthetics. They control medicine, and that is why they are able to tell medical schools what they can and cannot teach. They have their own sets of laws, and they force people into them. That is a mafia."
The AMA does not certify drugs - glad to see that a serious thread about a parents' genuine concern for their child has now been well and truly f***ked by JD. As usual.

Well, would you ask your mother-in-law? Your neighbor? Consult the Ouija Board? Pray for an answer? This is what I'd probably do: Be cognizant of who was near him/her, nobody who never learned to cover a cough or sneeze would pass through the door (sneezes can travel 30 feet). Keep him away from crowds. Keep him out of the hands of babysitters. Boil/disinfect food. Stay clear of open markets. Get out of The Third World. Wait for further notice on the drug. Keep reading everything I could find.

Don't know much about it except they have no lobby and the mafia can't control it.
It all comes down to laws of probability doesn't it? What's the probability you'll have a serious auto accident with your child in the car? Some woman in the news lately killed two of her own and three of the neighbor's. This drug has a probability of good and bad outcomes as well, unless you believe those who have a vested interest is its sales.
Since we live with risks every minute we live, why is this one any different? Since we don't know what's in an airborne droplet, or even if they are present, there is nothing we can do except take the defensive measures life has taught us to take. This is kinda like Gini, except with education and not income. Poor people die sooner, stupid people die sooner. Cheers.

- Jenny Mccarthy has spent years scaring parents out of giving their kids vaccines because she says the MMR vaccine, which prevents measles, mumps and rubella, gave her son autism. (time magazine (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1968100,00.html))
- No one actually knows what causes autism, but whatever. (the national institue of health (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/autism/detail_autism.htm#179513082))
- 736 parents who followed the advice of Dr. Bunny now have a dead kid. But they were all autism-free, I’d like to point out. (body count (http://www.jennymccarthybodycount.com/Jenny_McCarthy_Body_Count/Home.html))
- Yesterday the National Academy of Sciences released a comprehensive review of vaccine safety, and, “found no link between being immunized and the most serious health problems that have raised concern, including autism and diabetes.”(washington post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/vaccines-are-generally-safe-national-academy-of-sciences-says/2011/08/25/gIQA7XAjdJ_story.html?hpid=z4))
- The MMR vaccine was specifically studied to see if there was any link between it and the onset of autism. And just like every other study on this matter, they found that there is “no causal relationship” between the two. (the institute of medicine (http://www.iom.edu/Reports/2011/Adverse-Effects-of-Vaccines-Evidence-and-Causality.aspx))
- Ahhh, but Detective Tits knows better, and she defiantly responded to those quacks: “it caused seizures and brain inflammation in my kid which led To autism. That’s what I know.” (twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/JennyMcCarthy/status/106817571088637954))
- “Know” in this case means “guess” but she wasn’t done yet, she also set up a hashtag telling people to, “get a mercury free flu shot.” (twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/JennyMcCarthy/status/106804780915105793))
- So does mercury in our vaccines cause autism? Is that how her son got it? No, actually, because the MMR doesn’t have mercury and never has. (the national health service (http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/MMR/Pages/FAQs.aspx#thiomersal))
- By the way, the CDC, the FDA, the National Institutes of Health, the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Pediatrics all say that flu shots with mercury are perfectly safe. (the cdc (http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccine/thimerosal.htm))
In summation, science didn’t post their results with a hashtag so I guess they can fuck off. They better find a way to explain that vaccines are safe in 140 characters or less or else Jenny’s gonna kill some more kids.

This article is a pile of shit. With no factual evidence backing your claims. Vaccines contain human DNA which can alter current DNA stranding especially in growing children. Learn what the fuck you are talking about before you run your mouth.
It’s fun to bash Jenny McCarthy cause she’s about half retarded in her own right. But what you pose in your dipshit bullet points are drowning with “the syndrome” as well. You make no points whatsoever and only direct us to an NAS journal? really? the NAS? Please do some 3rd grade research on them as well…before you use them as a citation.
Again i know this is a fun website where nothing you say makes a fuck….but research yourself a bit better when you approach grown up topics outside of Katy Perry and her tit size. I suppose someone could also be categorized as a nut if they talked about putting the SV40 (non deactivated) in polio and yellow fever vaccines.
The mercury and aluminum alone in vaccines is enough to warrant a public figure speaking out. But you people are to hip for that to matter. You deserve what is being done to you… in every way.
diedinafreezer 08/27/2011 00:09
The IOM report took two years to produce, mostly behind closed doors, and was paid for by the Department of Health and Human Services, the government agency which is also a defendant against the vaccine-injured in the government’s vaccine court. This goes a lot further than a retarded playmate. “Vaccine Injury” goes far beyond autism.
