Even with a spike from iPhone 4 sales, the iPhone lost ground to Android, according to a new comScore report. Despite the premiere of the new iPhone, Apple’s U.S. smartphone market share in the three months ending in July dropped by 1.3 percent while Android’s market share grew by an five percentage points. Apple generally sees a slowing in sales as the mid-summer timeframe approaches, with a new iPhone anticipated by consumers. Thus, and typically, Apple had been losing market share all year long, but many expected that to change with the iPhone 4's release. However, things didn't exactly work out that way.
In fact, of the top 5 smartphone platforms, only Android grew; RIM dropped 1.8 percent while Microsoft dropped 2.2 percent, and Palm remained stable. The respective market shares were RIM at 39.3 percent, Apple at 23.8 percent, Android at 17 percent (but up 5 percent), Windows Mobile at 11.8 percent, and Palm at 4.9 percent.
Bernstein Research analysts Toni Sacconagh and Pierre Ferragu think that Android's installed base could exceed that of the iPhone in a little over 5 quarters. That's installed base, not just market share.
The problem, the analysts said in a Wednesday research note, is that although Apple has a big advantage over Android in terms of carriers 154 vs. 59, they lack deals with the largest carriers. While people say that an Apple deal with Verizon could kill Android, that's a silly assumption. Android is one carrier in one country, and not the country with the largest possible customer base. That honor would fall to China and India.
However, Apple also lacks deals with China Mobile (largest in China), Vodafone Germany, NTT DoCoMo, to name just a few large carriers eschewed by the Cupertino company.
It's still unclear, however, that simply making more carrier deals will be enough to stem the Android tide. It's not just about carriers, it's also about variety of handsets. Apple will never, unless it radically changes things, have more than two different form factors a year to sell. Many people like individuality, and a different handset than their neighbor. That's something Apple isn't going to be able to overcome.
OK. No problem, but I think Apple doesn't WANT to have 500 phones to choose from. I don't think they want to "overcome" that. I think the idea is for the iPhone to be unique. Sure they would want eveyone to have an iPhone, but that's why the stuff is the way it is. To appeal to those people who would buy it, for the rest there are other phones.
Gotta admit for a company that only has 1 phone in 2 colors, they are doing amazingly well.

The iphone 4 does have an impressive resolution. I wish netbook makers would take the hint and use at least 720P screens on their 10" lcds. More real estate = better for those that have eyes that can handle it.
Keep in mind though, before the 4, the iphone was significantly behind in resolution compared to a lot of the high end android phones. Apple plays a constant game of leapfrog where they get passed up in specs then with their next refresh they either catch up or sometimes jump ahead. For the majority of iphone4 specs, they were barely able to stay even with the android offerings at the time. Iphone 4's screen leapfrogged the competition. Iphone 3gs had a very low res in comparison.
There is a problem with Android I think. Because there are so many phones to choose from and so many different manufacturers, it's harder to make kick ass apps/games because of the many different specs, resolutions, etc. If I develop for iPhone I know exactly what it is.
The top Android phones are 800x400 or around there. I don't see anyone beating the retina display any time soon.
The screen resolution on my 3Gs is pretty good...or good enough for what I use it for...that said...the iphone 4 resolution is significantly better...
I reckon Android is going to screw itself if manufacturers and big carriers continue dicking around with the UI and adding their own crap to the OS.
Went out last weekend to check out top-end Android kit and couldn't find anything up-to-date running stock Android like I've seen on the Nexus One. Every device had a different front end - most were awful. Samsung's Galaxy S has TouchWiz, it was like iphone for kids, laggy too. I didn't like Sense on the HTC phones either. Looking at others . . . . Motorola sets ran old versions of Android - 2.1, and the Sony Ericsson sets had the ancient 1.6 software from yonks ago.
Too much fragmentation going on here . . . . .

That's the problem. They want to be different than the other guy.
Samsung has Touch Wiz, Motorola has BLUR, HTC has Sense. HTC is so into their stupid sense they will try to "enhance" Windows 7 Mobile even though they are prohibited by Microsoft to change it in any way.
And yes, Touch Wiz renders the Galaxy S unusable. I mean, for a 1ghz phone, that sputtering with everything is bullshit.
Most successful is HTC and the Sense. People like it. I don't because the widgets look cheap and the programs are left in a long list that makes finding them hard. Too disorganized.
Plus side is that people have more choices and can buy a cheap phone with Android and get the features they want.

Well, as long as resolutions, here are the 3 highest ones out there now. Other than the iPhone you have the HTC's with 800x480. So, let's see if the retina display makes any difference against the HTC Incredible.

I think this is what would make a difference for me if I were in the market for one.
Look at the difference between the Droid X with a 4.3" screen and the iPhone 4 with a 3.5" screen on the same webpage.

Without zooming in you can start reading the page right away with the iPhone 4, in the Droid X you get more of the page but the font is so small is unreadable so you have to take the extra steps to zoom in and out to read what you want. On the iPhone you can just start reading. So, in this case the nice retina display and the superior rendering of the page wins against a huge screen.
There's the other side, too - a 12px font on retina display would look a smaller because their pixels are, like, half size.
Maybe it hits the sweet spot where ordinary human eye can still read the "small type" and admire it's crispiness, maybe it would be too small to read. There are all kinds stuff to read out there, not only webpages - there are menus and manuals and e-mails and what not.
I like the idea of "individuality" where you have exactly the same phone as everybody else worth noting (BBs or Windows don't count to apple users, do they?)
Android is also breaking into the area of smaller, cheaper phones. Lower specs, smaller screens, but a lot more affordable and, more importantly, providing the same Android software, features and access to applications to everybody, not just smartphone geeks.
Yes. Didn't someone here buy a cheap android recently? There are some cheapy phones out there with Android v1.6. People just looking for something where they can get their email from time to time. Nothing fancy.
