Not for me, I'm happy with mostly everything. How does one address depression with those nearest and dearest. I'm not very sensitive to other peoples emotions so hence I am asking for folks with some advice.
Helping those with depression?
RespondFamily or friends?
Depressed or just sad and having a bad run? Has there been a diagnosis of depression? Medication?
Make new friends.
Avoid your family.
Fucking Westerners with depression. Poofs.
I'd definitely give this forum a pass when seeking advice on depression. There are so many other meaningful forums and sites that address this issue, why ask miscreants about it?

This. There's a big difference in clinical depression and a bout of sadness.
Dealing with a friend/family member who has depression can be incredibly challenging.
You don't 'deal' with clinical depression. It just is, like the weather.
Suicide is never the answer, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be a healthy part of the discussion.

Perhaps some folks have a depressed family member who lives far away from Thailand.

Which you...umm...deal with, right?
Or are you more the 'bark at the moon' than the 'take an umbrella' type?

So you are taking the stance of 'man up and get over it?' Doesn't happen. Depression is real to the sufferers. It's the abyss. The boogeyman, the lepers in your head. Scared shitless but helpless. The light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train. I emphasize with sufferers.

First of all, encourage them to get professional help, if the person recognises the depression it should be pretty straightforward, if not then things get tricky. Other than that, just be a friend, always be prepared to just listen and to talk about things. Avoid passing judgement or making suggestions on how to 'get over it'. Let them know you value them and the positive things they do. Offer support but don't impose it.
Depression is fucked, no two ways about it. From the outside it's hard to take seriously until it's too late. I reckon it is rife in the expat community in LoS, but it goes unaddressed because it's so easy to mask, and function 'normally'. In some ways I think living Thailand is itself a symptom of mental illness, certainly it's hardly the hallmark of a sane mind.

interesting. in terms of isolating oneself, there might be some truth in that.

theres little doubt this thesis could be greatly supported. could probably come up with something similar for those who choose teaching as a career. and then for those that choose to teach long-term in thailand...well...[image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/health-and-fitness-in-thailand/images/smilies/grin.gif]
Maybe I am depressed and mentally disturbed, yet no one feels sorry for me.

living in thailand is very isolating. people (like me) who come back for more, might be simply expressing their will to be alone, of sorts.
choosing a teaching career is a sign of those wanting to connect. the fact that its really only job available for a tefler might not be a factor. that is, they may not have chosen teaching more so than they chose to come to thailand. so they wanted thailand, but many, not giving a toss about learning thai...coincidence? no coincidence. they want to be left alone.
so that says enough about their choice. the option to teach in thailand is just a pathway. but the real choice was to go away....very very far away.
its says something. [image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/health-and-fitness-in-thailand/images/smilies/dontknow.gif] about some people.
