Week-old tea: 1 week old, gathering bacteria. Tea that is a week old, re-served

I was searching for an article I'd written about Kathmandu and ran across this old thread about the American Language Institute. I'd written on this board because I've taught in Thailand before; also, I had a naive thought that some of you might have an interest in some country and person away from your own tiny lives. The things they didn't tell you: the classes were for Nepalese employees of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross employees complained to me about the insanitary conditions first of the loo and then of the food and drinks ALC served them as food on breaks. I began boiling my own drinking water and making my own tea, after hearing this from them. The course was fine; it was a series of 3 workshops about writing. I didn't lie to ALC! That's sick. The workshops were pleasant and easy to teach; I enjoyed the Nepali students. I used only the materials ALC demanded I use and taught what ALC demanded I teach. I attended, on my own time, no less than six meetings reviewing their material because it was an important contract for ALC. They told me they were going broke and badly needed the money. Fine with me: I needed the money, too. It was all fine. However, the pollution in KTM is increasingly horrible, and I got sick -- a sinus infection. Perfectly normal. Or perhaps this is your first time overseas and you don't know where Nepal is? I had lab reports and doctor's notes for ALC. They refused to pay me for the week I'd worked. It went round and round, and my fever was 104. I went to them and demanded payment. After a half hour, they gave in. No big deal. The Red Cross director wrote and explained the situation to me: I had nothing to do with the cancellation of the course, and the students were satisfied with my teaching abilities. Well, this could matter less than nothing to me now, and I am completely unconcerned about your little comments. Before you start ripping my writing apart, though, best check into your own abilities. I know what I'm doing.

I can't tell if you're really bitter or that's part of the story. A good short story, by the way, you should keep up with it.
